Having healthy, lustrous and shiny hair doesn’t mean you have to spend a fortune at the salon, nor does it necessarily require hours of work every day. In this article we’ll be looking at some simple tips on how to have that beautiful shiny hair.
Make a Coconut Conditioner
This method requires a little bit of work, but the results can be quite dazzling. There are premade products that kind of do the same thing, but the results are not as effective as this pure raw mixture.
Step one is to scoop out the flesh from a fresh coconut and mash it up with a mortar an pestle until it has become a paste. Next, put the mixture into a saucepan and simmer on a low heat until the paste has melted into an oil. Allow the oil to cool enough until it’s just warm to the touch and apply it to the hair, using a comb to help you spread the coconut oil evenly. Leave in for 20 minutes, take a shower and just rinse your hair in warm water.
You’re going to smell quite strongly of coconut for a while, so it’s probably best to do this treatment when you’re not planning on going anywhere. Your hair will be glistening though, and will have a magnificent wet look. For best results, and to give the coconut oil a chance to nourish your hair, leave it roughly 24 hours before washing your hair with shampoo and conditioner. Particularly great for dry hair.
This method has a two-fold purpose. Not only will pure Aloe Vera extract nourish your hair and make it shiny, it’s also great for thickening very fine and thin hair when applied regularly.
It can be a pain to extract Aloe Vera directly from the plant itself, but you can buy pure Aloe extract in a tube from a supermarket or most pharmacies. Squirt generous amounts into the palm of your hand, rub your hands together and rake your fingers through your hair, finishing off with a comb to get an even coverage. Leave in for approximately 20 minutes, then wash it out with a quality shampoo and conditioner.
An alternative to this is to leave the Aloe in your hair for a sexy and dramatic ‘wet look’.
Stacked with protein, eggs are the perfect food to nourish the hair and render it healthy and lustrous.
Some people recommend using the egg yolks only, but without the egg whites themselves you lose most of the protein. Depending on the length of your hair, mix 2 to 4 eggs with some olive oil in a bowl using a hand whisk. Take the bowl to the bathroom and wash hair with shampoo. Apply the egg and oil mix to the hair and let it sit for around 10 minutes, then rinse several times to remove as much of the mixture as possible. After you’re done, blow dry and brush your hair and watch it gleam.
Use a deep conditioner at least once a week to really keep that hair healthy and shiny. There are many good ones on the market to choose from.
Wash your hair twice, preferably with a clarifying shampoo, then gently pat dry with a towel, removing as much water from the hair as possible without rubbing. Another method is to hold the towel in both hands and press the hair between the towel to squeeze water out of it. Apply the deep conditioner to the tips of the hair first and work your way up to the scalp, making sure to get a nice even coverage. Leave the product in for at least 10-15 minutes so it has time to work its magic, then rinse off and finish the treatment with clarifying conditioner. Rinse again and you’re done.
Use a plain yogurt for this as the last thing you want to put in your hair are food colourings and sugar. Pour yogurt into the palms of your hands and caress it through the hair. Apply the yogurt as thick as you like. Leave it in for around 30 minutes or until hard, then take a shower and wash with a good shampoo and conditioner.
Sounds odd, doesn’t it?
Beer contains loads of hops and malt and is great for nourishing damaged hair. First wash hair with shampoo, then apply flat beer from the roots to the tips. Massage it thoroughly into the scalp using a circular motion and leave in for a good 5 minutes. Then simply rinse off with fresh water. Try this treatment once every 2-3 weeks for well-nourished hair.
Shiny Hair From the Inside
Diet can also play a part in how healthy and shiny your hair will be. We need to feed our hair nutrients from the inside as well, and not just from the outside with products. Here is a list of some foods that will help nourish your hair to a lustrous shine:
